Back in the 80's, Amanda was studying political philosophy at The London School of Economics. It was whilst there that in 1986, she went with a number of other students to Moscow and St.Petersburg, which was then known as Leningrad. During her stay she obtained (I can't say how as someone may have to kill both me and her) several large propaganda posters, all of which have remained in the loft until recently, and the one of Lenin in the picture is the centre one of a picture of three. Now, most of our interior walls are painted white, and we like to use pots, pictures or other such items to add colour and interest. We have both tried various ideas in our downstairs loo, but it was only recently that A has suggested (guided, pushed or is it demanded?) that we try this picture. Not so bad for the ladies using the toilet I guess, but for us guys you stare him straight in the eyes! Having said that, I think it is growing on me.
Does anyone else have something a little unusual in their loo?

ReplyDeleteI have old art deco garden prints and some nudes in my bathroom. I always think it is funny when someone ( and many bloggers do ), refer to their spouses by initials or one letter. I was trying to figure out what ' A " was ? Cool poster, Gina
ReplyDeleteDear Gary, Without any doubt whatsoever, Lenin looks absolutely splendid where you have placed him. Indeed, I do somewhat envy you having these original posters as they are now, as I am sure that you will both know, highly collectable.
ReplyDeleteI have nothing so grand but do have a small collection of Soviet artefacts including a hardback pictorial guide to Leningrad published in Moscow in 1962. Clearly intended for the foreign market the text and captions appear in Russian, English, French, German and Spanish [obviously aimed at a wide audience!!].
You [and I include A here] may have read Gillian Slovo 'The Ice Road', a novel taking as its principal theme the seige of Leningrad during the last war. If not, then I should highly recommend it although the opening chapters do not immediately suggest where the narrative is going.

Edith, great to hear from you again. The other posters are huge and a little more communist worker/hammer & sickle and so maybe a bit too extreme. Neither of us has read 'The Ice Road', but I am buying it in hardback now and we both shall, thanks you for the recommendation. Will let you know what I think.
At least Lenin is staring you straight in the eyes and not somewhere else!
