I am being brave.

Before I tell you all about my week, I just want to share this 'clip' with you. It has been buried in the bowels of the computer for a long, long time, and was recorded in the days when I had colour in my hair, a side parting, bad moustache and glasses that made me look like an owl. It was an incredible amount of fun to do. When the tv people wanted a gardener to do an interview, there was panic, excuses, abject fear at the thought, and then there was me.....game for anything. Before you watch it please bear in mind that I was much younger (early thirties), had an abcess on my tooth, was being watched from behind the camera by about a half dozen nutty gardeners pulling faces and gesticulating, and was quite nervous. The Italian Garden and smaller surrounding ones were my personal babies for 15 years. Sorry, but I had to YouTube it as Blogger doesn't ever seem to want to upload any of my videos.........here goes.......

  1. What a spectacular garden to work in, but who was that man in the video ? Could not have been you, a very nice English accent , not a squeak to be detected ( thanks for that comment), and sounding so calm and studious. It must have been someone else and not the Gary we know who brazenly eats breakfasts ( or lunches , can't remember ), in private clubs he is not a member of, or who doesn't take the time to rescue his mother-in-law from her distress in a locked room, or who collects jewels in a treasure chest , or who takes his wife romancing all over England. Must have been someone else...a gardener-impostor of some sort. thanks for sharing , Gina

  2. Gary,

Thank you so much for sharing this clip. I could not detect any nervousness and it all was very professional. The gardens were beautiful and I find myself wondering how much have the gardens changed since the filming of this episode? - G

  3. Hi Gina,
I can't believe how little I had to say in those days. And thanks for the other comments!....lolol

  4. Hi Gary,
They have indeed changed one heck of a lot, with much more development having happened, including in the Italian Garden. Even my lodge was pulled down and built on!

  5. Thanks Gary - a very enjoyable look back at your history and the gardens you were responsible for. Very impressive CV. Always assumed statues just weathered and did not need cleaning. Very brave of you to go before the camera & show us the Gary of the past, one who incidentally morphed into such a gourmet and sophisticate

  6. Hi Laura,
Thanks so much for your comments. The statues, both marble and bronze, mostly got very dirty because of all of the hands touching them. Funnily enough, it was always Bacchus' bum that got the dirtiest!
