Oboe

There are few instruments that when played can reduce me to tears just by their sound. The first time I saw the film 'The Mission', and heard 'Gabriel's Oboe' being played, it actually made me feel quite strange. I couldn't explain why my chest felt tight, or find any explanation to my tears for Amanda's questioning eyes. She understood fully though, as music is an important part of our lives, and has had us both sobbing like idiots at times.

It's Sunday morning, and like every other morning the first thing that happens is the kettle goes on to make tea, and the radios through the house get turned on to Classic FM. It's just something we do.

As I was stirring our cups of tea, this piece came on the radio, one I haven't heard before, but the oboe and singing are exquisite. I hope you like it too.

    1. Oh, I'm not so savage when you get to know me John. But any anger certainly does vanish when I hear an oboe or cello play.

  2. I happen to like the oboe. I don't know why. Some things bring me to tears but not any music. Now at one time I had every radio on in the house. With reduced hearing I like as little sound around as possible.

    1. I would imagine that having reduced hearing can bring many constraints Red. It's a shame that one of them is having to keep your radios turned off now.

  3. Haunting, intense. Meditative.

  5. Beautiful.
I also like the oboe and the violin. Especially when it holds a note and then goes one note higher.
I am especially found of YoYo Ma, he is cellist that can send a note to your soul.

    cheers, parsnip

    1. Hi Parsnip,
YoYo Ma plays beautifully doesn't he? He becomes part of the music that he's playing.

  6. Hello Gary,

This is a beautiful piece of music and, surely, can soothe the nerves.

We have so many favourite prices and instruments that it is safer to say that we are lovers of classical music. But, one does not hear the oboe so very much and it is all the more special when one does.

And, how wonderful it is when one is so touched by musical piece that one is reduced to tears. This at least serves to remind us that the emotions are alive and well!

  7. Hello you two, it's good to see you back. Like you, I like most classical music, but rather hate anything too 'brassy'. The oboe and cello are particular favourites.

  8. We have one daughter who plays the oboe and another who plays the 'cello. I can assure you that a child practising the oboe could almost reduce me to tears, but not in the way that you mean! When part of an orchestra it is a very beautiful instrument. On the rare occasions that our daughters play music together it's difficult to keep dry-eyed!
