Seeing In The New Year

We all seem to celebrate the New Year in a different way. In fact we seem to do it differently most times. This year, Celia is staying with the relatives in Looe, and the daughters with their own respective families, and so we were on our own.

We started by hunting through our rather extensive 'old' movie collection for a film to watch, and came up with 'An Affair To Remember'. I think we had only seen this one about five times already.
Handsomeness and beauty, combined with intelligence and wit, made the two main characters perfect for the roles they were playing. Ok, it also helped that we are huge Grant and Kerr fans as well.

The happy ending to the film brought us to about 10.30pm, and so while Amanda cleared a few things away in the kitchen, I went out into a very windy garden to fire up the chiminea. We have had it almost since we met, and it's been the centrepiece of many an occasion over the years, and has held some blazes in it's time.

We sat in front of it, warming ourselves and drinking homemade mulled wine. We talked at times, and sat silently in our own thoughts at others.

It had been a long year, with some difficult hurdles to jump.
Amanda quite rightly said that looking at a fire can either help one to think, or indeed not to think.
At times I did both.

But at 00.01am it was 2015.

The event itself doesn't really mean much to me, it's just another day with a different date, but I suppose it does force one to reflect on the year just gone by.

The fireworks are good as well, especially when they are supplied by the neighbours.
In our case a lot of the neighbours are gypsies, who appear to prefer the 'banging' kind.
It's always a good show.

Happy days!

  3. We seem to have gone away from the big New Year's Eve ashes. Even house parties seem to have cut down. Most people like you and me celebrate quietly. At least you stay up until midnight.

    1. There was a time that I used to join in the noisy partying Red, nowadays I do prefer quiet reflection.

  4. Here in the states many of these old movies were shown for 24 hours on Turner Classic Movies including this one. Heaven. Also had noisy things going off in our development New Year's Eve but no lights in the sky to entertain.
Very best of health and happiness to you & the family in the new year. That's where true wealth resides. A few beautiful pieces of stunning glass also never hurts. :-)

    1. Thank you for your kind wishes, whoever/wherever you are. It is indeed a super movie. Is Turner Classic Movies a cable channel?
As for the glass, I may be luck enough to be heading to an antiques market tomorrow, so here's hoping eh?
