Mine's a plain coffee please!

The last two days have consisted of nothing but rain, strong winds, rain, oh....and rain! Consequently, not a lot has been done on the gardening front, although I did turn the herbs around in the kitchen window and take a hedge trimmer to my son-in-law, if that counts?
I have spent some of the time pacing up and down, wasting too much time surfing the web (a dangerously addictive habit if one let's it get a hold!), re-scheduling work again and again, and......going out for coffee whilst shopping for some clothes for the up and coming holiday to Edinburgh. I like authentic cafes, where one can simply take a seat and have table service take all the strain. However, occasionally Costas, or preferably Marks & Spencers Cafe have to do, and it was whilst queueing in the latter today that it struck me. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO COFFEE?
I like mine with a little warm milk or cream, or sometimes a nerve jolting double espresso, but that should be as far as it goes. I blame the humble cappucino for the demise, as people started to get all fussy and ponsy with their frothy tops and chocolate powder needs. Now we have frappachinos, soya lattes with cinnamon, mochachinos, frappelattes and syrups, nutmeg, squirty cream and marshmallows.........aaarrrggghhhhh! Please lets have the return of coffee....black or white, maybe the queues will move more quickly as well!....Cheers, I'm going for a beer!

  1. Dear Gary, Come immediately to Budapest. Here, wherever you are, from the grandest hotel to the lowliest café, the coffee is unfailingly good and comes totally without frills - and certainly not marshmallow. And always, no matter where, it is served by uniformed professional waiters and waitresses for whom it is a proper job rather than something to fill in during school holidays.

  2. Hi Edith,
It appears that it has become an american and british 'thing'. Cafes as you describe are getting simply too hard to find, and so Budapest is sounding very tempting. Maybe after the Chablis in Maida Vale eh?

  3. I only like my own coffee I make at home. Very simple, skim milk and a teeny-tad of sugar. Coffee with too many frills is for people who like desserts and want them in a liquid form. Coffee for sissys some one say.

  4. Hi Gina,
lol....Coffee for sissys, couldn't have put it better myself. It's the best way to make it at home isn't it, and yep, I take sugar as well!
