St. Aldhelms Head

The food was weighing heavy. Too much root veg in various forms, cakes, pastries, sweet things. Very nice, but the price has been paid in full. A couple of days ago we decided to venture out of our cosy and safe cocoon. Opening the front door was a mental challenge. It had been three days, and when the chunk of oak creaked open, the sunlight hit us. It was like the scene from Papillon, where Henri Charriere (Papillon) pokes his head out from the door hole during his solitary confinement.

We needed fresh air, and the outside world, and so headed for Worth Matravers, a favourite of ours.

After parking up at an 'out of the way' car park, we took the walk to Aldhelms Head (or Albans Head as it is also known). There is an ancient church on the cliff top, a place for reflection and peace.

It has always been a place where we find something to gain strength from, and as we strolled around, we talked about things that mattered in our lives at the present time.

It was very windy indeed, and very cold. During the summer months we have spent/will spend time just sitting here, with our legs dangling over the edge of the cliff, sometimes talking about important matters, sometimes about stupid and flippant things, and sometimes not talk at all.

It was a good time, this time, and we didn't even stop at The Square and Compass for the obligatory pint.

We headed home, ate good, wholesome, hot food.

The cherry liqueur chocolates came out, the malt whisky, and 'Chocolat' on dvd. ( You need the volume up full whack to hear the intro music, but it is enticing and enchanting!)

Yep, we went to bed totally satisfied that night.

  1. I spent a summer holiday at Swanage when I was about 14, and remember visiting that chapel. The perfect spot for calm and quiet contemplation. Best wishes to you all for 2018.

  2. I love the church! i could never hang my feet over a cliff, I'm way too afraid of heights but it sounds like a good way to spend some time.

    Happy New Year to you

    1. Hi Kylie,
It's nice to have endless days to rest and talk before the gardening madness starts again. I do tend to be a leg 'dangler', be it cliffs, piers or mountains. All best wishes to you and yours.

  3. So nice for you and Amanda to get out and do this. Such a fantastic spot for rest and contemplation.

Over the past 5 years I've become more of a hermit, hiding indoors, and am always amazed at how wonderful it is when I step outside.

    Have a wonderful 2018 ~ FlowerLady
